A 19-year old housemaid, Deborah Ola, was on Friday arraigned by the Police before the Ogudu Magistrate Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing a box containing jewellery worth N4 million.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Gbenga Salami notified the court that the incident happened on June 28 at 4A, Chris Nwosu Close, G.R.A, Ogudu, Lagos.
Salami, who explained that the accused is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, said that the accused claimed three men collected the jewellery box from her and that she came to her senses after they left the house.
“The accused was employed as a housemaid by Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Ajaero early this year and since then, she has been working in their house,” Salami said.
“She collected the key to her boss’ room on the said day with an intention to help in cleaning the room. Later in the day, the complainant was called by a co-tenant that the housemaid’s movement looked suspicious.
“The complainant came, only to see the accused crying and when he asked what happened, she said some people came to the house, collected her mobile phone and asked her to bring the box of gold jewelleries in her boss’ room.”
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, but the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Bola Folarin-Williams, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum. She adjourned the case to August 31 for mention.
