One of the biggest comedy films of the last century could be getting a sequel.
Grab your flaming boobs and false teeth everybody!
The Wrap has reported that Elf writer David Berenbaum is penning a script for the potentially huge sequel, and if all goes well, original director Chris Columbus will also return to guide Euphegenia Doubtfire.
These reports are sure to delight anyone who has watched the classic comedy every time it airs on TV – and that’s basically the entire nation, right?
If you have never seen the original – where have you been? – Robin Williams plays out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard, who is forced to dress up as an old Scottish nanny for a chance to see his children when he splits from their mother.
The news that the cross-dressing caper – which raked in $441 million worldwide at the box office and won a Golden Globe for Best Picture – may be returning to our screens has delighted fans, with “Mrs Doubtfire 2” trending on Twitter in the UK.
One excited fan posted: “You have no idea what I’m feeling right now!!” while another wrote: “Whaaaaaaaaat? Rumours there’ll be a Mrs Doubtfire 2??? This is too much for a Thursday morning.”
There are no details currently regarding a plot, but many are speculating that grandchildren will feature somewhere.
While Robin Williams is expected to return, one cast member that definitely won’t be is Mara Wilson, who played the adorable Natalie in the film. The star, who played the leading role in Matilda, has already quit film acting to focus on writing. Lisa Jakub, who played Lydia, has also retired from the showbiz world.
Even though the idea of a Mrs Doubtfire 2 may seem strange to some, it’s really not that big a shocker, considering the recent slew of nostalgia-fest productions. Dumb and Dumber is set to release its long-awaited sequel this November, while children’s classic The Goonies is also getting a part two.
It is thought that the studio behind Mrs Doubtfire has been attempting to get a sequel off the ground since 2001, but both Robin Williams and Chris Columbus were unhappy with the various storylines.
We’re off to practise our Scottish accents.
