Ivory Coast on Thursday said former Burkina Faso and one of Africa’s longest serving presidents , Blaise Compaore has left the West African company for Morocco.
Compaore fled to Ivory Coast on October 31 at the invitation of President Alassane Ouattara, a peoples revolt cum military putsch ousted him, when he tried to extend his 27-year reign of power.
But Compaore’s presence angered supporters of the former Ivorian president, Laurent Gbagbo, who Campore aided the fall of their president.
A source in the Ivorian president’s office said , Compaore, his wife Chantal and family members boarded a specially chartered plane for Morocco.
The source insisted Compaore’s departure was not definitive and that he was “welcome to return”.
Moroccan authorities have made no comment.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI sent a message of congratulations to Burkina Faso’s interim president, Michel Kafando, after he was sworn in on Tuesday.
