A dead Chinese teenager has been declared innocent 18 years after he was found guilty of murder, rape and was subsequently executed.
A court on Monday, in a rare overturning of a wrongful conviction declared a teenager innocent 18 years after he was executed after having been found guilty of murder and rape .
Hugjiltu and also known as Qoysiletu, was 18-year-old, when he was admitted that he chocked a woman to death after 48 hours of interrogation.
Huugjilt had tried to help save the woman after hearing her cry out from a public toilet. He reported the crime to police.
However, in April 1996, he was found guilty of raping and murdering the woman and in June of that year he was executed.
In 2005, a serial rapist and murderer, Zhai Zhihong, confessed to police that he had committed the crime after he was arrested for another crime.
“The Inner Mongolia Higher People’s Court finds Hugjiltu’s original guilty verdict… is not consistent with the facts and there is insufficient evidence,” the court in Hohhot said in a statement.
“Hugjiltu is found not guilty.”
As an expression of the court’s sympathy 30,000 yuan ($4850; £3080) was given to Huugjilt’s parents.
But this sparked outrage on social media, with one commentator posting ‘Is 30,000 yuan really enough to buy the life of a family member?’
